The Vaia storm
30/10/2018
Gusts of scirocco at 217 km/h hit the woods of the central eastern Alps with epicenter in the Belluno Dolomites. 41.000 hectares of forest affected. 8,6 million cubic meters of felled timber, roughly 7 times the amount for industrial purposes that Italian sawmills are able to use in one year.
This was the Vaia storm.
Huge damages to the forests, as well as hydrogeological instability , the loss of refuge areas for animals and of important landscape areas. A solidarity net was immediately activated to turn an emergency into an opportunity: giving value to timber coming from the damaged woods.
S-WOOD is set to enhance the timber coming from the damaged woods, turning this asset in 100% sustainable products
